From his Castle of Dreams
the Prince of the Morning looked down;
with the Sun in the West and the Moon in the East,
on his face as a smile and a frown.
One followed the other,
as trees turn to gold
and green fields to hay,
as children grow old and maids become wives,
and sailors in White Ships cross oceans so wide.
From his Castle of Sleep and rare Beauty
the Prince of the Evening looked up,
to where all the stars of the River
poured out of a bright silver cup.
Between the great stars a tiny boat passed,
and in its frail hull a babe lay all swathed in hours and days;
and from its tall mast a banner the colour of all joys and tears
proclaimed the proud valour of Man's mortal years.
The Prince of the Evening stood still then and stared,
as comets were born and fell from his hair.
For a minute that lasted a million long days
he watched the small ship
till it vanished awat.
From the Castle of Dawns and Beginnings
the Prince of the Morning looked down;
with the Sun in the West and the Moon in the East,
on his face as a smile and a frown.
At the edge of the Forest of Midnight,
beyond the pale rim of the day,
an old woman stood by a cottage,
and on her tired head was a crown.
As the bright sun of dawn touched the meadows
and called to all Sleepers to wake,
she turned and walked into the shadows
and laid the crown down by a lake.
From the fair fields of Truth and Desire,
two children walked into the Sun-
from the Castle of Dreams highest tower,
the SUN and the MOON shine as One.
