Caroline wants a doll for Christmas
and her mother's hand to hold.
Caroline just loves the lights
you see she's only six years old.
But Caroline has been the child
neglected and abused,
she knows all about booze and drugs,
the ones her parents chose.
And she knows to hide
when care and reason leave the room,
she knows not to cry outloud
when beaten with a broom.
Yet today she wears a priceless smile
that would light up any dawn,
and she prays that things will be much better
when her mom comes back home.
But Caroline wants a doll for Christmas
and her mother's hand to hold.
So I'll take her down to the prison
and we'll sing carols as we go.
She'll smile sweetly at her face
and wipe her mom's tears away,
offer a gift wrapped in shiny paper
and try to make it a special day.
Caroline, sweet Caroline
a daughter not my own,
is fostered here with love and tenderness
and has made our house her home.
And she'll have her doll and touch the hands
that were so cruel in the past.
For in the heart of that little girl
is a love that will always last.
Caroline wants a doll for Christmas
and her mothers hand to hold.
This season remember all the lost lambs
that have wandered from the fold.
